Bills LB Von Miller Using Draft Night to Hone His Inner GM
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane probably wouldn't mind having the expertise of linebacker Von Miller alongside him ahead of draft night next Thursday.
But despite having some passionate aspirations to be a NFL GM once his playing days are over, Miller is choosing to stand quietly on the side and let Beane do his thing in the draft room. Learning more about the craft is still on the agenda, though.
"I try to poke around," Miller said Wednesday when speaking to the media. " ... I don't want it to be anything big or huge. I just want to be around so I can continue to develop the skills that I need to be a great GM."
Miller has made it clear for a while now that becoming a GM is more than just a fun-sounding idea. It's one of the next serious endeavors of his life and football career. He attended the 2023 NFL Combine to pick the brains of many of the league's top executives. A veteran star like Miller seems to enjoy the process of becoming the young sponge again, soaking up all the knowledge he can by being in the room on draft night.
"I just try to pop in and see what the guys are doing," Miller said. "I just want to be around and I just want to see it and witness what's going on. I don't want to be like a volunteer or anything like that. I just want to sneak in and be in the back and just observe and see what's going on."
One of the most respected figures in Buffalo and all of football, maybe Beane asks his star linebacker's opinion on how a potential late-round prospect could fit on the defense. But though Miller's ego is nowhere to be found, perhaps a little practice couldn't hurt.
