Former Buffalo Bills DB Vontae Davis Dead at 35, Police Confirm
Former Buffalo Bills defensive back Vontae Davis has died, Davie, Fla. police told ESPN on Monday. He was 35.
The cause of death is currently unknown, though foul play is reportedly not involved.
Here's the statement from Davie police, per ESPN's Stephen Holder:
"This morning, Davie Police Officers responded to 6051 SW 178th Avenue in reference to a medical call. Officers were called to the residence by the house assistant, who found the homeowner deceased. We can confirm that the deceased individual is Vontae Davis age 35. Preliminary information suggests that foul play is not involved. This investigation remains active."
The Bills also released an official statement on Davis:
"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis. We are thinking of his friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time."
Davis, who spent the majority of his 10-year career as a Pro Bowl cornerback with the Indianapolis Colts, might be best known for what happened during his insanely short time with the Bills in 2018.
In a Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Chargers that season, Davis officially retired at halftime in a move that had never been seen before in the league. It was the final time he'd play in the NFL.
Davis released a statement after his short stint with Buffalo and the out-of-nowhere-retirement:
“This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL, but in my 10th NFL season, I have been doing what my body has been programmed to do: Get ready to play on game day. I’ve endured multiple surgeries and played through many different injuries throughout my career and, over the last few weeks, this was the latest physical challenge.”
Buffalo would go on to lose that game 31-20, as Davis had totaled just one tackle in the only game of his Bills career.
