Buffalo Bills WR Gabe Davis Talks Lack of Targets: 'Not That Easy'
The Buffalo Bills have reeled off the two biggest wins of their season so far over the past two weeks, and have done so despite little production from Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis.
Buffalo's top two receivers didn't have to do much in Sunday's 31-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys or in the Week 14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Diggs' lack of production certainly has its concerns, as he hasn't topped 100 receiving yards in eight straight games, but there's no reason to think that one of the NFL's best receivers won't pick things up considering the amount of targets he's been receiving.
However, Davis has been nearly invisible in the receiving game, as Josh Allen has targeted him a combined three times for no catches over the past few weeks. Going back to Buffalo's Week 11 win over the New York Jets, Davis has gone catch-less in three of the last four games. In the middle of all that was a huge performance against the Eagles in Week 12 when he had six catches on 12 targets for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Davis was open and honest about the lack of targets he's been receiving when speaking to the media on Wednesday, but made sure to keep it team-first.
“It’s not that easy, but you know I gotta do it," Davis said. "I gotta be and do what my team asks me to do and all I can do is control what I can control. But, you know, I’m doing good in the blocking game and... real confident in that.”
Davis is in his first year as a team captain, which means newfound responsibilities as a leader. Despite some frustrations earlier in the season, he's answering the tough questions while not making it all about him. Though this is expected of a team captain, there's certainly been receivers in NFL history that didn't take a team-first approach when things weren't going their way.
Still, there's nothing wrong with wanting a few more targets. Davis said he talked with Allen and both realize that sometimes a thin passing connection is out of their control.
Chargers Cut Team Captain Ahead of Matchup vs. Bills
“Me and Josh had a conversation and, you know, again, that’s what the game brings," Davis said. "You know, we both know that we want each of us to be successful — my success is his success, and vice versa when he’s throwing me the ball. So, it’s not that we don’t want it to happen, but you know, the league is tough and all the stars gotta align for stuff to go your way all the time.”
Davis has posted 39 catches for 595 yards and six touchdowns this season.
He'll look to get back on track when the Bills (8-6) visit the Los Angeles Chargers (5-9) on Saturday night.
