Josh Allen QB Style 'Not Healthy,' Asserts Bills Coach Sean McDermott
PHOENIX - Josh Allen's "style'' - all of it, but especially his willingness to run effectively but recklessly - is one of the traits that Bills Mafia loves most about its quarterback.
But Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott, while obviously a fan of his star player, is openly questioning that issue of "style.''
"I don't think that's a healthy way to play QB in this league,'' McDermott told NFL.com, "and it's undefeated that things are going to happen when you play that style, that brand of football.''
Allen, 26, is 6-5 and 237 pounds and his frame helps him survive when in the pocket. But when he improvises as a runner? That same frame dishes out as much punishment as it absorbs. Oh, and the statistical results are there, as Allen has run for 3,087 yards and 38 touchdowns in his five seasons while averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
Allen's view, in short? "It's football,'' he likes to say. ... though he has acknowledged that maybe there is a learning curve here.
"I think I can be better in that aspect," Allen said early last season regarding the subject of recklessness. "But ... I do things sometimes that are necessary in my eyes to help our team win a football game. That's all it is.
"But,'' Allen finally noted then, "at the end of the day, availability is the best ability."
His coach obviously shares that view.
The Bills have some things to figure out when it comes to getting over the championship hump. As Allen co-star Stephon Diggs has said, Buffalo is "racking its brain'' trying to solve some of those riddles.
But Josh Allen's "best ability'' - "availability'' is clear, and it's no riddle. It's simply a matter of Allen doing what is truly best to help the team win football games.
