Saquon Barkley to Sign with Bills? 3 Keys as Oddsmakers Link Giants RB to Buffalo
The idea of the Buffalo Bills chasing Saquon Barkley at the October 2022 NFL trade deadline was surely a non-starter; the price was too high, the New York Giants were contending and had little interest in divorcing from their best player, and the Bills running backs room seemed full-up.
Has any of that changed as the Bills and Giants approach NFL free agency?
The oddsmakers think it is so.
According to the latest odds, the Bills join the Chicago Bears at the top of the list in terms of possible Saquon landing spots, with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs also theoretically in play for the 26-year-old superstar.
What dominoes have to fall here?
First, the Giants' contractual chasm with Barkley would need to remain that way while New York at the same time opts to use its lone franchise tag on quarterback Daniel Jones.
Second, the Bills would have to alter their cap-related thinking; GM Brandon Beane is on-record as saying this offseason won't feature any Von Miller-sized additions.
And third, Buffalo would have to decide that even with Devin Singletary maybe leaving in free agency, the cupboard doesn't need a $13 million APY (or whatever) running back because 2022 rookie James Cook is ready to take over in 2023.
Having said all of that: The Bears have the best odds to sign Barkley at +400, with the Bills next up at +500. Chicago makes for an easier call here, as the Bears are sitting on $100 million in salary cap room.
But Barkley moving across New York state to join the explosive Josh Allen-led offense? It might more more "tantalizing'' than it is "realistic.'' But tantalizing it is.
