'Need for Speed!' Should Bills Sign Packers WR in 'Poach' Move?
Evan as the Buffalo Bills did so many things right on offense in Week 15’s 31-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys, and even as they are fully focused on the Saturday night meeting at the Los Angeles Chargers, talent acquisition is, as any GM will tell you, "a 24/7 business.''
So ... do the 8-6 Bills have a "need for speed'' inside the wide receivers room?
Bleacher Report is suggesting the Bills consider adding via "poaching'' the wide receiver Bo Melton from the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers. ... and we're not sure we understand the appeal.
Melton is 5-11 and 189 pounds and, per B/R, “runs a 4.34 40-yard dash and has some juice with the ball in his hands.''
We'll believe the 4.34 40. But we're not sure how we know about "the juice'' given that Melton, a former seventh-round draft pick, has been in the NFL for two years and has a statistical total of (drum roll, please) ... one reception for seven yards.
Do the Bills, led by superstar Stefon Diggs in this department, really need that right now? They are already struggling a bit in getting production out of Gabe Davis and Dalton Kincaid, the hybrid receiver. Deonte Harty is a speed guy on the roster. Andy Isabella - who happens to be the same size as Melton and just as fast - brings experience and is in the Bills building.
Bills at Chargers: A Kellen Moore Audition in Buffalo?
Add somebody like Melton, "would give the Bills a high-upside 24-year-old,'' writes B/R, suggesting this would be a "futures'' move while forgetting that the "poaching'' process means Melton must be added immediately to their active roster for the final three games of the season.
Who would be dumped? And what would be gained by that?
Yes, talent acquisition is a 24/7 business. All ideas can be considered. But all ideas do not have merit.
