Stefon Diggs Reveals 'No Surprises!' Will That Make Bills Trade Rumors Go Away?

An interview from the Pro Bowl Games has the media erroneously speculating that the Buffalo Bills receiver Stefon Diggs wants out.

Just stop the nonsense. The Buffalo Bills are not trading receiver Stefon Diggs prior to the 2024 season.

The media-created "Diggs drama" seems to be picking up steam as the offseason arrives, and, just as it was last year, it's nothing but fantasy.

The latest episode in the saga was launched by Diggs' interview with NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe at the Pro Bowl Games. Somehow, a simple, honest comment was construed into the idea the Bills' WR1 is looking to leave town.

"It's a long offseason in front of me. As far as what the future holds, shoot, I don't have any surprises for you right now," said Diggs in the interview.

No surprises now and no surprises in the near future. Before one even begins to question Diggs' role in Buffalo's offense, or his relationship with quarterback Josh Allen - or his relationship with his Dallas Cowboys brother Trevon, who chirps quite a bit about Stefon joining him in Big D - the salary cap reality makes the idea of moving him a non-starter.

Diggs, whose 2024 salary becomes fully guaranteed in March, carries an approximate $31 million dead cap hit according to Spotrac. There is apparently a potential out in the contract after the 2024 season, but the team would be required to account for $22.2 million in dead money against its 2025 salary cap under that scenario.

It's clear the Bills still see Diggs as an important piece on offense. He was targeted 160 times in the passing game in 2023, a six-target bump from the year prior. Even with a second-half slump, Diggs surpassed the 100-catch mark for the fourth consecutive season as a Bill.

Then, there's the fact that WR2 Gabe Davis is set to test the free agent market, and it will be a challenge for the Bills to compete with the offers he's anticipating. So, with Davis likely gone, there's virtually no way for the cap-strapped Bills to adequately replace their top-two wide receivers over the course of one offseason.

It all adds up to the likely certainty that Diggs will be playing for the Bills come Week 1, and odds are he'll command another 150+ targets from Allen. ... oh, and another likely certainty: Every time Stefon says something offering just a pinch of color or flavor? Another cycle of rumors is sure to follow.
