Cons

  • Could be more consistent with his block shedding.
  • Limited pass-rush ability.
  • Needs to be more consistent in making a play on the ball carrier when close.
  • Can get worked to get his pad level high and lose the leverage game.
  • Offers up no positional versatility and will be stuck as a 0/1 technique.
  • Needs to add counters to his game, as when his initial move is stopped, that's about it for the rep.

Overview

Martin is a traditional nose tackle that must be conscious of his pad level with his natural height. He does well to keep it low off the snap but can get worked by blockers to raise that level. There won't be much pass-rush potential with Martin, which will limit his time on the field. However, he has the tools to be a reliable two-down run defender that can eat up space and blocks.

Fit with Broncos

The Denver Broncos had some rough moments against the run in 2022, and Vance Joseph doesn't have a great history regarding his defenses against the run. Denver could use some extra depth on the defensive line and a piece to take over, depending on what happens with Mike Purcell.

Denver could cut Purcell this offseason, but his contract runs through the 2023 season. There will be rough moments with Martin as a rookie, but he could be the guy immediately. Ideally, you give him a year or two to develop and work on consistency before competing to take a starting job.
