Predicting Broncos' 2023 Defensive MVP

Circle this name as the leader in the clubhouse to be the Denver Broncos' defensive MVP in 2023.

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the upcoming NFL season, a spotlight of sorts has been cast on inside linebacker Alex Singleton. Following a noteworthy 2022 performance, he has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.

A stalwart on the Broncos' defense, Singleton finished the 2022 campaign with 163 total tackles (101 solo), six tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and three pass break-ups. He demonstrated an innate ability to diagnose plays quickly and to blitz when called upon.

Singleton's performance, leadership, and tenacity led to a well-deserved three-year, $18 million contract. It's a clear vote of confidence from the Broncos, signaling their belief in his integral role in shaping the team's defensive future.

Singleton is hands-down the leader in the clubhouse to be Denver's defensive MVP in 2023.

However, it's not just his exceptional performance that makes him a strong candidate for defensive MVP. It's also the situation the Broncos find themselves in.

A lack of substantial investments at outside linebacker and interior defensive line leaves Singleton and fellow inside linebacker Josey Jewell under more pressure to perform. Singleton has shown that he can handle this pressure, and the anticipation is high for him to capitalize on this opportunity.

Another player expected to bolster the Broncos' defense is linebacker Drew Sanders — a 2023 third-round draft pick. Sanders, known for his speed and ability to pressure the quarterback, is predicted to play a key role in pass-rush pressure packages. His inclusion in the defensive strategy adds another dimension and flexibility to the Broncos' game-planning.

The final piece to the Broncos' defensive puzzle is the talent in the secondary, specifically safety Justin Simmons and cornerback Patrick Surtain II. Simmons, a longtime staple in Denver's defense (3x All-Pro, 1x Pro Bowler), brings reliability and leadership. At the same time, Surtain (1x All-Pro, 1x Pro Bowler), adds an element of youth and athleticism that could be key in creating turnovers.

Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, the Broncos are set to adopt a more aggressive strategy. Joseph's game plan is expected to rely heavily on Singleton's leadership, Sanders' pass-rushing ability as an inside linebacker, and the secondary's playmaking skills. This strategy could significantly improve the Broncos' defense, potentially propelling it to one of the top spots in the league.

Singleton's path to becoming the Broncos' defensive MVP of the 2023 season is by no means a smooth road. On the contrary, it's filled with formidable AFC West opponents, high expectations, and a significant responsibility.

Yet, given his track record and relentless determination as a former undrafted player, expect Singleton to rise to the challenge.
