Report: Ex-Broncos QB Brett Rypien Signs with Rams
Former Denver Broncos quarterback Brett Rypien has agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, 9NEWS' Mike Klis reports. Additional terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Rypien, who will join his new team Thursday, is expected to compete for the Rams' No. 2 job behind Matthew Stafford.
“This organization is at the point where they won a Super Bowl two years ago and I think that’s where they expect to be," Rypien told Klis upon putting to paper. "Everything I’ve heard and seen the mentality is to get back this year. I’m excited to be a part of it and excited for the opportunity."
Undrafted out of Boise State in 2019, Rypien, 26, made eight appearances for the Broncos, completing 80-of-130 passes for 778 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He went 2-1 across three starts, including a Week 14 victory versus Arizona last season in place of Russell Wilson.
In March, Denver declined to place a $2.63 million tender on Rypien, then a restricted free agent. The club shortly after signed Jarrett Stidham to a two-year, $10 million pact to become Wilson's backup.
"There were a couple of directions really with that position and there were a handful of No. 2’s that either I have worked with, or we felt comfortable with," head coach Sean Payton said following the addition of Stidham. "In this case, I think he’s a No. 2 whose arrow is moving in a direction where we feel like he can become an NFL starter in our league. The evaluation was pretty crystal clear for all of us. I think he's someone that's going to be great in the room. He's smart. Quietly, that was an important sign for us.”
