Broncos 2020 Roster Breakdown: Albert Okwuegbunam | TE

The Broncos drafted one of Drew Lock's friends and former Missouri teammates in Albert Okwuegbunam. How can the tight end can contribute as a rookie?

Each summer, Mile High Huddle goes player by player to break down the Denver Broncos' roster. That’s right, all 90 of them.

We'll scrutinize each player's history, dating back to college, and what they bring to the 2020 Broncos. Next up? Albert Okwuegbunam, the fourth-round tight end.

The expectations of Broncos fans might be a bit too high for Okwuegbunam with the traits that he has. He can contribute in 2020 in a few ways, but to get him on the field, the Broncos would have to take off a better and more dynamic weapon.

Okwuegbunam has potential, which is exactly why Denver drafted him. Early on in his career, he can contribute in a very niche role and that is as a straight-line seam-stretcher with good speed for a tight end, and also in the red zone.

Denver should not call upon him as a blocker as he is far worse than Noah Fant, and Okwuegbunam also has an issue of turning through his routes, hence the use of straight-line seam-stretcher earlier.

So in that niche, the Broncos can find a role for Okwuegbunam, but he probably ends the season with less than 15 catches for under 150 yards. The potential role is so niche and circumstantial, it will be difficult for him to make an impact.

When it comes to Okwuegbunam, it also needs to be remembered that developing a tight end is actually quite difficult. It typically takes about three seasons to really see the work tight ends put in begin to pay off.

As Drew Lock's friend and former Missouri teammate, Okwuegbunam does have that one advantage. But what else? Check out the video above for a deep-dive answer.
