Broncos Working Out Former Saints Kicker
One day removed from releasing their longest-tenured veteran Brandon McManus, the Denver Broncos are on the hunt for a new kicker. On Wednesday, the Broncos will work out veteran kicker Brett Maher, per multiple reports.
This will be the first job vacancy at kicker the Broncos have had since 2014, when McManus arrived via trade. So what do we know about Maher?
Maher has been kicking in the NFL since 2013, with a few pitstops along the way. Many of his NFL stops have been on practice squads.
However, he was a twice-decorated All-Big 10 selection at Nebraska and earned accolades north of the 49th parallel in the CFL. He has appeared in 54 career games in the NFL.
Maher spent time with Broncos head coach Sean Payton in New Orleans back in 2021. So there is a base familiarity there.
Maher's career field-goal percentage in the NFL is 81%, and has a career-long of 63 yards. The all-time record was co-owned by ex-Bronco Matt Prater for years (64 yards) until Justin Tucker broke it with a 66-yarder.
Maher has gone 128-for-134 on extra-point attempts (95.5%). In all honesty, he's not the most accurate or reliable kicker, but he'd come at a relative fraction of what it would have cost to keep McManus.
Maher is 33 years old.
