Report: Broncos to Hire Ex-Saints OC Pete Carmichael
The Big Easy band is back together — this time in the Mile High City.
Per Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com, the Denver Broncos are expected to hire former Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael as a senior offensive assistant. Carmichael will reunite with head coach Sean Payton and OC Joe Lombardi, all of whom had previously worked on New Orleans' staff.
"The move is expected to be officially announced at a later date," reported Duncan.
Hired in 2006 as quarterbacks coach, Carmichael, 52, ultimately spent 16 seasons with Payton in New Orleans. He was promoted to coordinator in 2009 — the year the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV — and held that post until his Jan. 16 firing.
The duo experienced continued success during the Drew Brees era, finishing top-10 in points scored 13 times while amassing six NFC South division titles. "Carmichael played a key role in building one of the most prolific offensive attacks in NFL history," according to Duncan, a longtime beat writer.
Carmichael will be a trusted voice in the room as Denver aims to improve an offense that ranked 26th in total yards per game and 19th in points per game in 2023, Payton's inaugural campaign.
Comparatively, the Carmichael-guided Saints offense ranked 14th and ninth in those same categories last season.
