Report: Broncos Target Saints QB Coach Ronald Curry for OC
Sean Payton has identified a candidate, if not the potential frontrunner, to become the next Denver Broncos offensive coordinator.
Per Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com, the Broncos "plan" to interview Saints quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry for the position — one of four New Orleans staffers with whom Payton is interested in reuniting.
If Curry's name rings a bell ... well, that's because it should. A 2002 seventh-round pick, he spent the majority of his playing career with the then-Oakland Raiders, collecting 193 catches for 2,347 yards and 13 touchdowns. Including one that may still exist in the recesses of memory.
Curry, 43, entered the coaching world in 2014, landing an offensive assistant gig with the San Francisco 49ers. He took the same position with the Saints in 2016 and worked his way up to wide receivers coach two years later. In 2021, he was promoted to QB coach, replacing Joe Lombardi, who the Chargers recently fired as OC — and who many thought would get the same job alongside Payton in Denver.
While also holding the title of passing game coordinator, Curry is credited with helping veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton notch a career-high 66.7 completion percentage last season. The Saints also ranked seventh in net yards gained per pass attempt.
The Broncos, by the same metric, ranked 22nd under former QB coach Klint Kubiak, a holdover from the previous administration whom Payton is unlikely to retain.
Curry would be Payton's second hire since taking over as Broncos HC on Jan. 31. NFL Network reported Monday the team is expected to tap Saints assistant offensive coach Zach Strief as its new OL coach.
Duncan also reported that Payton is targeting Saints football operations guru Kevin Petry and offensive assistant Declan Doyle, who'd become Denver's new tight ends coach.
