Broncos Ink WR Josh Hammond in Wake of Virgil Injury
Another wide receiver injury has precipitated another roster move for the Denver Broncos, who signed former XFL WR Josh Hammond, the league announced Monday.
Hammond, 25, entered the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida. The 6-foot, 194-pound pass-catcher has appeared in two career games, both with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also had cups of coffee with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots in 2022.
Hammond — who ran an unofficial 4.53-second forty-yard dash — most recently played for the DC Defenders of the XFL, tallying 34 receptions for 331 yards and one touchdown across 10 starts.
"Hammond, more quick than he is fast, has a tremendous feel for spacing and boasts the savviness to find the soft spots on short and intermediate routes," Pro Football Network's Andrew DiCecco wrote in 2020. "Though not advertised as a speed threat, his long speed was hardly utilized at Florida, and could potentially be tapped into at the next level."
Hammond's addition comes after the Broncos lost speedy reserve WR Jalen Virgil to a torn meniscus, suffered in Saturday's preseason contest at San Francisco. Virgil is expected to miss up to 4-6 months following corrective surgery.
Hammond presumably will help fill Virgil's role, competing for backup snaps behind Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Marvin Mims, and Marquez Callaway.
