Report: Broncos Sign Chiefs FB Mike Burton to a One-Year Deal

The Denver Broncos have their fullback.

The Denver Broncos punctuated Day 2 of the NFL's 'legal tampering' window by signing a fullback. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos signed former Kansas City Chiefs fullback Mike Burton to a one-year deal.

"Fullback news! The Broncos are signing FB Mike Burton to a 1-year deal, source said. He reunites with Sean Payton, who he was with in New Orleans," Rapoport tweeted on Tuesday evening.

Indeed, Burton had two different stints with Payton and the New Orleans Saints before joining the Chiefs in 2021. He was a 2015 fifth-round pick of Detroit's out of Rutgers.

For a fullback, life in the NFL can be tough, and often, their careers are a bit meandering before they land in the perfect situation. While it remains to be seen whether Denver will be that type of situation for Burton, there's no doubt that Payton has some designs for the brand-new Super Bowl champion, even if it is a one-year rental.

The Broncos lost their lead-blocking fullback when Andrew Beck signed with Houston on Monday. Burton steps in and provides that skill set with gusto, plus he brings an already-established knowledge of Payton's scheme.

The 31-year-old has appeared in 113 NFL games with 17 starts. He brings two career touchdowns to the table — one on the ground and one through the air.

Don't be surprised if Burton ends up with a role on special teams in Denver. A solid signing to be paired with Tuesday's addition of running back Samaje Perine
