Broncos Sign Former Saints RB Tony Jones Jr.
The Denver Broncos have brought aboard their seventh offensive player via free agency, signing ex-Saints and Seahawks running back Tony Jones Jr., the club announced Thursday.
Jones, 24, went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2020 and spent two of his first three seasons under now-Broncos coach Sean Payton in New Orleans. Including last year, he totaled 59 rushes for 163 scoreless yards across 14 appearances (five starts).
Jones was waived by the Saints midway through the 2022 campaign. Denver subsequently attempted to claim him off waivers, but he instead was awarded to Seattle.
At 5-foot-11, 224 pounds, with 4.68 speed, Jones is a physical, downhill runner not dissimilar to new Broncos teammates Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine.
"Jones has decent vision and feel for the blocking scheme, but he needs to put away any finesse tendencies and buy in fully to becoming a hammer-head in order to give himself the best shot," reads his NFL.com pre-draft scouting report. "He lacks creativity and athleticism to avoid NFL swarms when he slows his feet, so finding a downhill attack will also be essential. Ultimately, proving himself in blitz protection and on special teams may be essential to finding an NFL fit."
With the addition, the Broncos' RB room now consists of Williams, Perine, Jones, Damarea Crockett, Tyreik McAllister, and Tyler Badie.
