A hulking back.

Pending a physical Monday, the Denver Broncos reportedly plan to sign former XFL running back Jacques Patrick after last week's rookie minicamp tryout. The team is also expected to add quarterback Ben DiNucci to its offseason roster.

Playing for the San Antonio Brahmas, Patrick, 26, finished last season as the XFL's second-leading rusher, compiling 443 yards and five touchdowns on 115 carries. He paced all RBs in receiving with 30 catches for 238 scoreless yards.

The 6-foot-2, 234-pound bruiser went undrafted out of Florida State in 2019 and, multiple practice-squad stints later, made two regular season appearances for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, before resurfacing in the startup league.

Joining an increasingly large stable of backup RBs, Patrick will vie for touches behind incumbent starter Javonte Williams (who's recovering from a multi-ligament knee injury) and free-agent additions Samaje Perine and Tony Jones.

The lot also includes 2022 holdovers Tyler Badie and Damarea Crockett and undrafted rookies Jaleel McLaughlin and Emanuel Wilson.

“I think we've got a few here that we're looking at during this camp," Broncos head coach Sean Payton said Saturday. "I feel really good about our group of veterans that are here in the building. When we signed Samaje, this is a guy that gave us flexibility. We know that he can play and be an every-down back. Our current starter [RB Javonte Williams] is doing extremely well. I would tell you that we expect him to be ready for the start of training camp and that's good news. His rehab is going well. I don't want to speak for him or [Vice President of Player Health & Performance] Beau [Lowery] or anyone else, but we get the daily reports. We’re pretty tight-lipped relative to information going out, but I've read a lot and I think his rehab is going well.”
