Report: Broncos Waive TE Albert Okwuegbunam
The Denver Broncos decided against keeping and apparently could not find a trade partner for tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, whom the team waived Tuesday ahead of the 2 p.m. final roster deadline, 9NEWS' Mike Klis reported.
The move comes as a surprise after Okwuegbunam enjoyed a terrific preseason, with his blocking and pass-catching improving dramatically. The latter was on display amid Saturday's 41-0 victory over the Rams when the fourth-year vet made seven receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown — including a dazzling one-handed grab.
“He’s one of those guys that—he had a big night. I mean holy cow," Broncos coach Sean Payton remarked in his post-game press conference.
A 2020 fourth-round pick out of Missouri, Okwuegbunam appeared in 26 regular-season contests for Denver, tallying 546 yards and four TDs on 54 catches.
His departure — and that of fellow TE Tommy Hudson, who also was waived — whittles down the depth chart to Greg Dulcich, Adam Trautman, Chris Manhertz, and undrafted rookie Nate Adkins.
The Broncos are likely to carry the four above on the 53-man squad when it's finalized later Tuesday.
UPDATE: The Broncos did not waive Okwuegbunam. Amid conflicting reports, the team has confirmed that Okwuegbunam was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles at Tuesday's deadline.
