Report: Ex-Broncos' Starting OT Visits Dolphins & Former Coach
The Denver Broncos have been urged by an NFL insider to re-sign veteran offensive tackle Cameron Fleming. To this point, the Broncos have stood pat.
Now, per the NFL wire, Fleming visited the Miami Dolphins and could soon be swooped up. 9NEWS' Mike Klis brought Fleming's visit to South Beach to light and Dolphins insider Alain Poupart confirmed the news.
"Per wire, OT Cam Fleming visited the Dolphins whose O-Line coach is Butch Barry. Both were employed by Broncos last season," Klis tweeted on Monday.
Barry was one of the first coaches fired after Nathaniel Hackett was handed his walking papers in December. The Broncos' offensive line was atrocious last season, though it was a unit decimated by injuries. Still, Barry landed on his feet with a position coach job in Miami.
Fleming, 30, joined the Broncos in 2021 as a depth tackle and went on to be a more-than-serviceable option. In 2022, he bailed the Broncos out when right tackle Billy Turner's knee injury kept him sidelined to open the season, and later when starting left tackle Garett Bolles suffered a season-ending broken leg.
Fleming started 15 games for the Broncos last year. In his nine NFL seasons, he's started 111 games. While he's not going to be mistaken for an All-Pro, he was surprisingly consistent last year when called upon.
The Broncos have a formidable starting five, after signing left guard Ben Powers and right tackle Mike McGlinchey in the first wave of free agency. O-line depth, however, remains a concern.
Fleming is an experienced tackle who doesn't command top dollar for his services. But, with Sean Payton now running the show and helping to pick the groceries as much as cook the meal, perhaps Fleming doesn't fit his prototype.
The Broncos have five selections in this week's NFL draft. Perhaps Payton will find a tackle who does check his requisite boxes by week's end.
