Broncos WR Courtland Sutton Linked to Patriots in New Trade Scenario
The Denver Broncos have a log jam at wide receiver. In the new Sean Payton offense, Russell Wilson has many pass-catching options.
It's a good problem to have.
But it could be enough of a problem that the Broncos end up trading one of their star wideouts. According to Bleacher Report, the New England Patriots are in need of making a “big splash” before training camp starts, and he pointed to Maurice Moton Belichick trading for Broncos WR Courtland Sutton.
To be clear, Sutton isn’t a disgruntled player. He wants to stay in Denver, but the Broncos selected wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. in the second round of this year’s draft and exercised the fifth-year option in Jerry Jeudy’s rookie deal. With Tim Patrick back in the fold after missing the 2022 campaign (torn ACL), Mims could replace Sutton in three-wide receiver sets.
It's understandable why the Patriots would want Sutton’s services in Moton's scenario. In 2022, Sutton's 64 receptions, 13.0 yards per catch, and 829 receiving yards support his ability to be a reliable deep threat. However, it's worth noting that Moton's take comes months after Sean Payton stated that the Broncos will not be trading Sutton or Jerry Jeudy.
“I think it’s pretty common every offseason," Payton said in March. "[There is a] new coach [and it’s] not a real deep receiver draft. You read a bunch of these things that are written now. I would say a number of teams have called on those players. I said it yesterday—it’s not something that we’re interested in doing.”
Despite suffering a torn ACL in 2020 and the 2022 season being replete with struggles on offense, Sutton has been very solid during his tenure with the Broncos. Not only has he grown as an NFL player, but he's also a veteran in the wide receiver room.
Sutton's leadership is on full display both on and off the field. This is why he should remain a Bronco for the foreseeable future.
