Dre'Mont Jones Sends Bombastic Tweet After Signing With Seahawks
Dre'Mont Jones no longer collects his paychecks from the Denver Broncos after the Seattle Seahawks signed the former third-round defensive lineman out of Ohio State on Tuesday. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks signed Jones to a three-year deal worth $51.5 million with $23.5 guaranteed.
Jones confirmed the news on Twitter with his usual dash of aplomb.
The Broncos did not exercise their prerogative to franchise-tag the interior pass rusher last week, opting to let him test the free-agent market. Jones' departure from the Mile High City was then made fait accompli on Monday night when the Broncos signed defensive lineman Zach Allen to a multi-year deal.
Allen will plug the hole vacated by Jones and is reunited with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who presided over his development in Arizona. While Allen might not be quite the twitchy athlete that Jones is on the defensive interior, he's a far more consistent run defender. Make no mistake, though — Allen can rush the passer.
In his four seasons in Denver, Jones started 29 games and totaled 22 sacks and 133 combined tackles (76 solo). His 6.5 sacks were a team-high last year. It's unfortunate that he never got to be part of a winning team in Denver, but Jones didn't seem satisfied with the direction of the Broncos after Bradley Chubb was traded to Miami last season.
Like many former Broncos of late, Jones will get a new start in Seattle. While it's always bittersweet to see drafted-and-developed Bronco take his talents to another NFL city, Jones deserved to get paid.
He found that fortune in Seattle. Happy trails.
