Ex-Broncos DC Ejiro Evero Takes Same Position in Carolina
Now-former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero wanted out of his contract — and was granted his release Saturday — to pursue greener NFL pastures. The location of those pastures? About 1,500 miles east.
The Carolina Panthers announced Sunday that Evero has agreed to terms to become the team's defensive coordinator under new head coach Frank Reich.
Evero's one-and-done departure from the Mile High City became increasingly likely over the latter half of the 2022 regular season — especially after Denver fired his close friend, former HC Nathaniel Hackett, in December. Evero declined an offer to replace Hackett on an interim basis but did interview for the full-time job that eventually went to Sean Payton.
Evero also interviewed for head-coaching positions in Arizona, Houston, Indianapolis, and Carolina, as well as Minnesota's DC vacancy.
A rising star at 42, Evero did yeoman's work with an injury-decimated Broncos defense, which ranked eighth in total yards allowed and 10th in Football Outsiders’ Defensive DVOA. An ex-secondary coach, he oversaw All-Pro campaigns from cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Justin Simmons, who tied for the league lead with six interceptions.
As quick as Evero arrived is as quick as he bolted. And now the Broncos are on the hunt for his replacement, scheduled to speak with Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores on Tuesday. The team also requested an interview with Seahawks associate head coach Sean Desai to potentially succeed Evero.
