Broncos DL Eyioma Uwazurike Suspended Indefinitely for Gambling Violation
Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended indefinitely — and cannot apply for reinstatement until next July, knocking him out for the entire 2023 season — after violating the NFL's gambling policy, the league announced Monday.
“The NFL confirmed today that Eyioma Uwazurike of the Denver Broncos has been suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season," reads the press release. "Uwazurike will be eligible to petition for reinstatement no earlier than July 24, 2024.”
The Broncos also released a statement confirming Uwazurike's ban.
“We were informed by the NFL today that Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended by the league indefinitely for violating its gambling policy," the statement said. "Our organization fully cooperated with this investigation and takes matters pertaining to the integrity of the game very seriously.
“The Denver Broncos will continue to provide all members of our organization with the necessary education, resources and support to ensure compliance with the NFL’s Gambling Policy.”
A 2022 fourth-round draft pick, Uwazurike appeared in eight games as a rookie, tallying 17 tackles (11 solo), two quarterback hits, and a pass deflection across 165 snaps.
Uwazurike was expected to compete for a primary backup job, or potentially a starting role, along Denver's defensive line, which already was thinned-out by nose tackle Mike Purcell's recent placement on the Non-Football Injury list.
Expect the Broncos to scour the open market for an insurance signing prior to Friday's start of training camp.
