Javonte Williams Sounds Off After Risking Knee in Broncos' Preseason
After suffering a career-threatening injury that led to missing 13 games in 2022, Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams returned to the field on Saturday vs. the San Francisco 49ers. Williams' presence provided the spark that ignited the Broncos in their first offensive series.
On the first offensive play of the game, Russell Wilson threw the ball to Williams on a screen that he dropped. However, on the very next play, he caught a pass for 12 yards. He would end up totaling four catches for 18 yards, and three carries for 12 yards before exiting the game.
Afterward, Williams discusses how eager he was to play again and get some live reps under his belt prior to the start of the regular season.
“It was really all about just getting the nerves off," Williams said on Saturday. "I just wanted to get tackled again and to see how it felt. That’s the biggest hurdle I had left with the whole recovery process. Getting it out of the way was good.”
Williams has to be feeling even more confident after being tackled seven times and suffering no injury setbacks. He talked about the effect it had on him.
“It was just like a weight had been lifted off me," Williams said. "I was thinking that it was going to hurt, but I really didn’t feel it. I jumped right back up.”
This is extremely encouraging news to Broncos fans, as many were unsure whether Williams would return to normal. Williams tore his ACL, LCL, and PCL in Week 4 last year, so it's miraculous that he can recover quickly and return to the field expeditiously.
This is a positive harbinger for the Broncos. With Sean Payton's brilliant offensive mind and Williams' talents, this team just may have enough to make hay in a crowded AFC West.
