Report: Ex-Broncos Interim HC Jerry Rosburg Hired by Ravens

The man who helped stanch the bleeding in Denver is returning to NFL coaching.

Former Denver Broncos interim head coach Jerry Rosburg has found a new NFL home with the Baltimore Ravens. Per NFL’s Tom Pelissero, Rosberg will be in a role that is focused on game management:

"The Ravens are expected to hire Jerry Rosburg in a role focused on game management, per sources. Rosburg, 68, was Baltimore’s special teams coordinator from 2008-18 before retiring. He served as Denver’s interim head coach in 2022. Now, back to Baltimore, he will be focused on in game management," Pelissero reported on X.

The Broncos' 2022 season was characterized by incompetent coaching, a lack of identity on offense, and horrendous quarterback play. To assist with game management and pre-snap issues, the then-head coach Nathaniel Hackett hired Rosburg a couple of weeks into the regular season, coaxing him out of retirement.

After the firing of Hackett, Rosburg was named interim head coach for the remaining two games of the season. During that time, Rosburg fired special-teams coordinator Dwayne Stukes and offensive line coach Butch Barry.

Rosburg also gave then-offensive coordinator Justin Outten the responsibility of calling plays. The Broncos ended up with a record of 1-1 over that two-game stretch, and Russell Wilson performed much better. The team looked more prepared to play the games. Outten called plays tailored to Wilson's strengths, and the special teams unit improved.

Rosburg started his career as a secondary coach for Boston College in 1997. In 1999, he became the cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator for Notre Dame. He then went to the NFL with stops in Cleveland (2001-2006), Atlanta (2007-2008), and Baltimore (2008-2018).

During his initial stint with the Ravens, Rosburg helped to turn around the special teams unit. There were palpable improvements with Rosburg at the helm in Denver, and he proved to be an asset in 2022.

Time will tell if he can help bolster a Baltimore franchise where he garnered much of his reputation.
