Report: Broncos Lose WRs Coach Zach Azzanni to Jets
Zach Azzanni is following Nathaniel Hackett to the Big Apple.
Per 9NEWS' Mike Klis, the Jets on Monday hired Azzanni as wide receivers coach, the same position he held with the Broncos for six seasons. Azzanni will continue working under former Denver head man Hackett, now New York's offensive coordinator.
Hired in 2018, Azzanni's tenure spanned three different coaching regimes and was highlighted by the development of several prominent Broncos WRs, including Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, and Kendall Hinton.
Emphasis on "development": Patrick and Sutton (a 2019 Pro Bowler) earned lucrative contract extensions in 2021, and Jeudy experienced something of a breakout last year, leading the team in catches (67), receiving yards (972), and receiving touchdowns (6).
"I keep pointing at him because this dude, when it comes to mindset, has more speeches and more quotes than anybody I know, in terms of mental toughness," former Broncos star Emmanuel Sanders said of Azzanni during his September retirement press conference. "He has the right mindset, and he knows exactly what I mean by that.”
Azzanni, 46, joins Hackett and instructional designer John Viera as ex-Broncos staffers that have defected to Gang Green this offseason.
Of the 2022 holdovers, only defensive line coach Marcus Dixon and secondary coach Christian Parker are expected to return under new HC Sean Payton, who's brought in six assistants of his own accord — with more on the way.
