Patrick Surtain II's Father Says Broncos CB 'Deserves Better'
The Denver Broncos' historic Week 3 loss to the Miami Dolphins reverberated well beyond the visitor's locker room, well beyond Hard Rock Stadium.
The effects of the 70-20 demolishing were felt about 20 minutes north, in Plantation, Fla., home of former longtime Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain, who expressed displeasure over the situation his son — Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II — is entangled within.
"Toiling in the soil!! SMH 2 you deserve better," Surtain tweeted during the game.
Surtain II is arguably the sport's best at his position, but even the reigning All-Pro was powerless to defend Miami's offensive juggernaut, which clocked an astronomical 726 total yards and 10 touchdowns in the league's first 70-burger since 1966.
Normally an airtight defender, Surtain II finished with zero pass breakups while allowing a career-high four receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown to Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. He earned a paltry 47.8 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus.
And, afterward, was as dejected as one might imagine.
Far from the 0-3 Broncos' biggest issue — among, in fact, the few pieces worth retaining ahead of a potential rebuild — Surtain II is under team control through the 2024 season, with a club option for the following year.
But if things continue spiraling, and especially if dad gets his druthers, there's a non-zero chance he doesn't make it that far in the Mile High City.
