Outlet Suggests Broncos Could Soon Bench Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson has been a consistent bright spot for the Denver Broncos so far this season. His turnaround under Sean Payton has been significant from last year.
Many media outlets and analysts have asserted varying opinions of Wilson's performance. While some have noticed his marked improvement, others believe that he hasn't shown the growth needed to take the Broncos to the next level.
The Score, a digital media company based in Toronto, Canada, went as far as to release a picture of both Wilson and New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson with the caption: “Which Wilson gets benched first?”
This is clearly a slight to Russ, a nine-time Pro Bowler. This also suggests that Wilson is still the scapegoat for the Broncos' ongoing struggles.
Contrary to belief, Wilson is exhibiting shades of his old style of play. Entering Week 4 of the 2023 season, several of his stats rank in the NFL's top-10 among QBs.
- Touchdown passes (T-5th)
- Passing yards (7th)
- Passing yards per game (7th)
- Yards per pass attempt (6th)
- Completions of 20+ yards (T-5th)
- Completions of 40+ yards (T-1st)
- Passer rating (8th)
Wilson has also received praise from his head coach. On Wednesday, Payton commented on Wilson’s play.
“He’s moving well, and he’s making good decisions," Payton said of Russ. "I knew he could throw the deep ball well, but we’re seeing it. He’s operating quickly and throwing well.”
Although the sample size is small, it's encouraging to see Wilson’s progress under Payton. He's using that escapability to spark this offense.
Let’s hope Wilson continues to improve and galvanizes his teammates to play better in an attempt to turn this season around in a major way, starting with Sunday's road tilt with the Chicago Bears.
