Here's Why the Russell Wilson Doubters Are Wrong About 2023

While it seems the world is against him, Russell Wilson will respond with a furious comeback season.
In this story:

Russell Wilson's first season with the Denver Broncos was not an exhibition of his potential. Admittedly, it was a forgettable season for him as he had only 16 touchdowns while tying a career-high 11 interceptions, and his rushing yards barely crossed the 200-yard mark.

A renowned and decorated quarterback, Wilson seemed like a square peg in a round hole in Nathaniel Hackett's offense. The veteran signal-caller couldn't maximize his waning abilities under Hackett's system, a narrative that led to a demoralizing season for Denver.

Nevertheless, football is a complex chess game with moving pieces, and the quarterback is undoubtedly the straw that stirs the drink for any offense. New Broncos head coach Sean Payton acknowledges this and must reshape the offense to maximize Wilson's strengths.

In Payton's playbook, the running game reigns supreme. The newly added Samaje Perine, known for his versatility, is set to take the reins in the Broncos' ground game.

As Javonte Williams continues his recovery, the duo will form a potent one-two punch in the back half of the season, providing a balance that will alleviate some of the pressure from Wilson, and allowing him to command the offense with greater ease and confidence.

The Broncos' passing game will see a reimagining as well under Payton's watch. Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton will operate as reliable chain movers, their hands and route-running skills essential to the Broncos sustaining drives.

In addition, rookie wideout Marvin Mims Jr., a veritable speedster, will be a deep threat, capable of changing the game with a single catch. Payton's offense will also exploit the speed of tight ends Greg Dulich and Albert Okwuegbunam, particularly in the red zone. Wilson will be able to distribute the ball effectively and avoid the sort of tunnel-visioned passing that plagued his 2022 season with this multi-faceted receiving corps.

However, as crucial as the supporting cast is, the Broncos' fortunes in 2023 remain intrinsically linked to Wilson's performance. He needs to step up and reclaim the form that once placed him among the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Expectations are high under the guidance of Payton, and while there will be a marked improvement from last year's debacle, one must temper those expectations. Wilson will likely remain the third-best quarterback in the AFC behind some heavy hitters. Yet, a resurgent Wilson will be a sight to behold; his leadership and playmaking ability driving the Broncos to a respectable 9-8 record.

The 2023 Broncos are a team in transition, with the promise of better days on the horizon. While Wilson's first season may have left fans questioning his capability, even in Payton's system, his capacity at the quarterback position will be on full display.

In addition, this upcoming season will testify to Wilson's resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity, reinforcing why he will be the team's offensive MVP.
