Report: Russell Wilson Underwent Offseason Knee Surgery
On the heels of his disappointing 2022 season, Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly went under the knife. In a manner of speaking, anyway.
Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday morning that Wilson underwent a knee scope following the season.
"Broncos QB Russell Wilson had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee following 2022, a procedure to fix an issue that had nagged him for a few seasons. He is back working out and throwing after the minor scope and should be fine for OTAs. He'll be at full health for 2023," Rapoport tweeted.
Wilson will enter his age-35 season with a new head coach, and one he reportedly has pined for since his time in Seattle. Sean Payton will take charge of the Wilson project after the veteran signal-caller produced his worst year as a pro.
In 2022, under the coaching influence of Nathaniel Hackett, Wilson passed for a career-lows in completion percentage (60.0) and touchdowns (16). His 84.4 QB rating was also a career low.
Finishing with 3,524 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions (not quite a career-high), Wilson also produced 277 rushing yards and another trio of scores. On the surface, the numbers aren't all that cringy, but anyone who watched him play last year in Denver could see that something was rotten in Denmark.
Broncos Country hopes that Wilson's ostensibly healthier knee (come OTAs and training camp), combined with the influence and stewardship of one of the game's true offensive coaching savants, will lead the nine-time Pro Bowler back to his form of yore. If Wilson can bounce back, and 2022 was just an outlier, the Broncos will be competitive again.
