Seahawks Show Disrespect to Russell Wilson's No. 3 Jersey
Until Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson proves he can genuinely revive his flagging career, the Seattle Seahawks, and their disgruntled fans, will continue slinging mud.
As things currently stand, the blockbuster trade that transplanted Wilson in Denver hasn't gone swimmingly for the Broncos. Wilson has shouldered the most blame for the Broncos' disastrous 5-12 campaign, which gift-wrapped premium draft capital to the Seahawks.
As the only quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl in Seattle, some of the flak directed at Wilson has crossed over the boundaries of good taste. The Wilson shade has morphed into the malignant sort.
The latest indignity comes in the form of Wilson's famous No. 3 jersey being given to cornerback Artie Burns, whom the Seahawks recently signed in free agency.
It's an ignominious end for the iconic No. 3, some might say, but it's clear the Seahawks are keen to present the appearance that they've quickly moved on from their former poster boy. On the flip side, such over-the-top disrespect shown to the organization's greatest-ever player reveals a distinct lack of class on Seattle's part.
Nobody is suggesting the Seahawks should do anything other than make their own internal decisions, but it might end up motivating Wilson substantially more than proving any mischievous point of their own.
Wilson, just like all highly-paid quarterbacks, will have to absorb the blows and come back swinging for the fences once again. Broncos OTAs will provide the first opportunity for Wilson to take the essential steps toward long-term redemption.
Wilson may or may not have heard about his old jersey number being reassigned to Burns, but the onus is on Denver's No. 3 to make sure that all the bitterness and petty recriminations are soon relegated to the dustbin of NFL history.
