Broncos HC Sean Payton Teases RB Samaje Perine's Role in 2023

Sean Payton has a clear plan for Samaje Perine.
In this story:

Sean Payton has put an early emphasis on loading his new-look Denver Broncos roster with hard-nosed football players who can set a physical tone.

Last season, Javonte Williams went down badly injured with multiple ligaments torn in his knee. The offense's chronic lack of punching power saw teams routinely push the Broncos around.

The issues were compounded by a lackluster offensive line that lacked the nasty streak to really put their hands in the dirt and stop the bleeding. Consequently, the Broncos wisely allocated a considerable chunk of change in right tackle Mike McGlinchey and guard Ben Powers this offseason — both of whom are proven, battle-tested bruisers.

Payton also feels that he has acquired a running back who will not only beat up on defenders but will be able to stay on the field in lots of different scenarios with the addition of former Cincinnati Bengal Samaje Perine.

“I see position flex," Payton said at the Combine. "If you really watch Perine and study the tape, you see him on early downs, and you see him playing third down. He’s a really good receiver. Obviously, he could block the blitz. He’s big, he’s physical, he’s smart, he’s tough. He’s built to last. That was an important piece for us knowing the injury that we’re dealing with. He was really important.”

Payton views the 27-year-old as a Swiss Army-type player moving forward. It might just see Latavius Murray on the outside looking in through no real fault of his own. Perine is the epitome of a player who excels in doing whatever it takes to get reps, but the selfless qualities he possesses in abundance will probably show up most when he's embracing tough pass pro responsibilities.

Having a back who is smart enough to pick up blitzes and keep quarterback Russell Wilson clean might end up being the unlikely straw that stirs the drink for the Broncos' offense this season.

Perine is unquestionably not the splashiest acquisition Payton has made this offseason, but he seems to enjoy talking about the veteran back. That speaks volumes of how important a role he might play in 2023 and also the team Payton is forging in his own image.
