Sean Payton Reveals Critical Info on Broncos’ Russell Wilson Timeline

The clock continues to tick on the Denver Broncos' quarterback situation.
In this story:

As many coaches and executives have arrived in Indianapolis to kick off the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, many faces around the league have hit the podium to discuss the state of their team's roster and what we can expect over the coming weeks as the highly-anticipated offseason begins to get underway.

Among those we saw speak with the press was Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who got hit with some eye-catching questions concerning the future of his team's quarterback position.

Coach Payton went in-depth to discuss the next steps in the process concerning their QB, detailing when the decision on Russell Wilson is expected to be made.

“We go through the combine week here." Payton said. "Next week—Tuesday or Wednesday—we’ll be in meetings with ownership, and I expect that we’re going to know fairly quickly. I said at the Super Bowl but I think more specifically, somewhere in the neighborhood of next week we’re going to [know]. There’s a couple of factors here. Obviously, the cap projections came out and we’re further down the road with the draft class and obviously the pro free agents. I would anticipate it being within the next two weeks.”

Consistent unrest has surrounded current signal caller, Russell Wilson, with an abundance of signs pointing to Denver eventually opting to cut ties with the 9x Pro Bowler after two tumultuous seasons with the team.

Wilson finished his second season with the Broncos, producing 3,070 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on his way to his fiery ending in the orange and blue. The assumption is that Russ will see another chance to suit up as a starting quarterback once again for next year, but it remains highly unlikely to see it take place in the Mile High.

There are still a few happenings underway revolving around what's next for the Broncos' quarterback dilemma, but the end of the wait on a conclusion to the Russ saga seems to be right around the corner. With the NFL Draft Combine approaching quickly and free agency inching closer, it allows for the opportunity of Denver finally being able to pivot off of Wilson as more options become available.

Whether the next man for the job ends up as a rookie or a veteran taken off the open market, Payton aspires to find a clear-cut solution at the position to move forward with.

“In this league—which is very competitive in our division—it’s vital. I saw this humorous meme the other day where there’s a Broncos fan with a shirt on with like eight quarterback’s names crossed through them and he’s drinking the quarterback ‘Kool-Aid.’ Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”

Expect to see Wilson inevitably cut no later than the March 17th deadline for when the quarterback's sizable contract would be in for an added $30 million in guaranteed money.
