Payton on Trade Deadline: 'Broncos Not Even Remotely Shopping Anyone'

Neither buyers nor sellers?

Less than 24 hours after securing the franchise's biggest win since Super Bowl 50, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton gave his strongest refutation yet on the possibility of selling at Tuesday's NFL trade deadline.

"We’re not openly or even remotely shopping anyone,’’ Payton told reporters Monday, via 9NEWS' Mike Klis. “Have people called? Sure they have. And typically the buyer wants the media to know they called. Not the seller. And so we’re preparing right now, I have a (next opponent) Buffalo cutup that I’m going to look at. I’m going to look at the league’s touchdowns from yesterday. And I’m sure at some point I’ll meet with (general manager) George (Paton) but we’re looking at the next opponent.”

Not more than a month ago, there were rumors of an impending fire sale in the Mile High City with the team cruising to another losing season. Everyone from wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton to left tackle Garett Bolles to safety Justin Simmons were bandied as potential trade options

But that all changed following Sunday's 24-9 victory over the Chiefs — the first such victory in the last 17 tries. The Broncos have now won two straight, surging into their bye week with a 3-5 record and keeping hope alive for an improbable playoff run.

Which makes it easy for Payton to insist they'll neither be buyers nor sellers on Halloween.

“There’s no approach [to the trade deadline]," he said after conquering Kansas City. "Honestly, and you guys know this, it’s a busy time of the year and there’s pressure on news media to be on top of potential stories, trade stories. The teams that aren’t doing as well always fall into this position, and I understand it, but we’re not the team looking to go out and buy. We can’t control the buyers that call. We always pick the phone up—you have to professionally, but that’s it. This doesn’t—we have a plan on where we see ourselves, and that’s an honest answer. When I see or hear things, I chuckle because I’m thinking, ‘Well I haven’t talked to anyone about that,’ and if I haven’t, then it’s probably not true."
