Baker Mayfield Reacts To Myles Garrett Extension, He and Denzel Ward Could Be Next
The Cleveland Browns checked off a big part of their offseason checklist, maybe the biggest, by extending Myles Garrett. Extending Garrett five years gives the team basically seven more years of having Garrett at defensive end, solidifying a huge part of their plans going forward to bring a super bowl trophy to Northeast Ohio. Next season, Cleveland could be extending a couple more names that have an imprint on the future.
Baker Mayfield reacted to the Garrett extension on Twitter, showing he was happy for his star teammate. Also, signaling that he is ready to get to work.
Mayfield was the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, a year after Garrett was selected. Breaking into the league his rookie year throwing 27 touchdowns, it looked as if Cleveland really had their quarterback of the future. Number six took a step back the following year with a 22-21 touchdown to interception ratio. Many believe that this is a sophomore slump, partially his own fault, but there were some other factors. A bad head coach, wideouts that weren’t healthy and a bad offensive line. Each of those factors should work in his favor this coming season, if we see one.
If Mayfield shows promise, improvement from last year, the Browns will undoubtedly try to extend him next summer. In fact, that will be best case scenario, solidifying that Cleveland has their quarterback of the future. It will not be a Patrick Mahomes type contract, but a good year will get Mayfield a nice five year contract.
Another one that the Cleveland Browns will be looking at extending is Denzel Ward. The key for Ward will be staying healthy and not missing games. Missing seven games in two years has left the Browns hurting at the defensive back position multiple times recently. But, when on the field Ward has been a top 15 corner in the league when healthy. Ward has five interceptions in two years and has really been impressive in man to man matchups. Ward has the speed and ball skills to play with the best of them and is definitely a prime target for an extension next summer.
The numbers for Mayfield will really just depend on how well he plays this coming season, if we see one. Say Mayfield has a good season, which he is set up to do, the Browns will likely offer him an extension with at least 28 million a year.
Ward on the other hand, if he can put a full season together, he could work himself into a spot with the highest paid corners in the league. Reasonable estimates would pay Ward around 14 million a season.
Definitely more players Cleveland will want to extend in the future, but it starts with these two who are building blocks on each side of the ball. With the salary cap a question mark going forward, it’ll be interesting how it pans out.
