Washington State safety Jalen Thompson enters next year's supplemental draft, Cleveland Browns could have interest
Washington State safety Jalen Thompson has lost his final year of eligibility due to purchasing an over the counter substance that's banned by the NCAA. It's not a steroid, but somehow it requires losing his final year of college football. That seems overly harsh, but whatever.
As a result, Thompson is entering the NFL's supplemental draft, which takes place in July. The timing is really unfortunate in that it doesn't give Thompson much time to train for workouts beyond what he's already been doing, so he may not put up the numbers he's hoping for athletically.
From a production standpoint, Thompson is pretty good. His solo tackle market share wasn't as great as you'd hope this past year, but did hit the mark his sophomore year. Meanwhile, he did get enough on ball production in terms of pass deflections and interceptions.
Thompson is a free safety and slot corner that understands how to find the ball. The Cleveland Browns are relatively thin at safety and it is a position they look like they will need to address for 2020. Thompson could be a fit for what they want. The issue is that they might not see the roster space to bring him in, get acclimated quickly enough to really get a fair shake to prove he'd help them, so he might not be someone they want to bid a draft pick on.
Thompson was someone I had tabbed to watch for 2020. The hope was he could put together a complete season from production standpoint and add more muscle to his frame. He had been listed at just 190 pounds this past year.
At least for the Browns, it feels like Thompson's timing isn't ideal to add him, but if John Dorsey likes his talent, he may go ahead and add him anyway. If Dorsey does like him, they shouldn't bid more than a 6th round pick to get him.
