Cleveland Browns still searching for answers to fill out tight end group
One position on the Cleveland Browns that is completely up in the air is the tight end spot behind David Njoku and Demetrius Harris as well as how they want to address their primary blocking back spot, whether that's another H-back type player like Orson Charles was or a true fullback.
Injuries and ineffective play have been problematic in determining who if any of the players on the Browns roster currently should get the job. They have two weeks of practice and two preseason games to try to come up with an answer.
Pharaoh Brown has had the most opportunity but has not distinguished himself whatsoever. He may be the the favorite largely by default at this point.
Seth DeValve has missed both games in the concussion protocol, so hopefully he will be available shortly to make a case for himself.
Rico Gathers hasn't been here long so it's difficult to judge but given his career to this point, he looks like a long shot.
Mik'Quane Dean, an undrafted free agent, has been brought in, but if he's played, it hasn't been enough to draw notice.
Joe Kerridge the fullback drew some positive attention in the joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts, so hopefully he'll get some opportunities to prove himself with the ones next week. His presence may be more of an experiment as to whether Freddie Kitchens wants to play with a true fullback or not, but if he's better than whatever fourth tight end or H-back might be there, it's logical to keep him.
Outside of perhaps kicker, tight end is the position that stands out for the Browns to target in a trade the next few weeks as well as the waiver wire. They need someone to step up and take that job, because the lack of one impacts how the Browns can operate their offense.
If David Njoku isn't out there, they do not have a tight end that can function as a pass catcher, so unless they are using Demetrius Harris to block, they just have one, instead opting for another receiver or running back. It's not a great situation, so the hope is the players they have or John Dorsey can come up with a solution in next few weeks.
