Gerald McCoy hasn't closed door on playing for the Browns
On Wednesday, Gerald McCoy went on Fox Sports One's Undisputed and was asked why he didn't choose the Cleveland Browns (it popped up YouTube as a suggestion related to the Cleveland Browns, which is the only reason I am aware of this).
McCoy was complimentary of the Browns saying that of the teams he chose between, they are the most talented. He also said he really likes Freddie Kitchens and believes in Baker Mayfield, which should surprise no one. Mayfield and McCoy know each other through Oklahoma and McCoy was a big fan watching Mayfield play his college football there.
The other detail McCoy mentioned was that he specifically wanted a one year deal. Then, he proceeded to say that the Browns aren't what he needed right now, to which Skip Bayless insinuated that they aren't ready yet. McCoy more or less confirmed that and said he felt like the Carolina Panthers are more proven when it comes to winning now.
Nowhere in the conversation did money come up, nor would McCoy admit anything if it did. The reporting suggests that the Browns offered the least amount of money and the Baltimore Ravens actually offered the most, at least in terms of guaranteed dollars.
Money may have played the biggest role in the decision, but maybe it's as simple as McCoy not wanting to play for Browns until they prove something. Regardless, the one big takeaway is that McCoy hasn't closed the door on the possibility of playing for the Browns.
And in a year he will be a free agent again and the Browns should be more proven. A year theoretically closer to contending, McCoy might be more interested and the Browns might be willing to offer a few more dollars to close the deal.
It was a missed opportunity rather than some massive failure the Browns didn't get McCoy this year. It would've been nice to have him in the mix with Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi, but it was never the end of the world.
And it seems very possible the Browns will have another chance to take a run at McCoy next year if that's what they want to do. Maybe at that point he will be viewed as the final piece to a Super Bowl puzzle.
