Cleveland Browns: The perils of summer vacation

With minicamp over, the Browns enter their summer vacation period before training camp starts at the end of July. Players and coaches can get away, go on vacation, see family and friends and some of them end up getting arrested. Kareem Hunt and Antonio Callaway are the two most at risk players, but if they can stay out of trouble, they could really move the needle next season.

NFL summer vacation. The time when all organizations and fans collectively knock on wood that none of their players, coaches and personnel as a whole end up making the news for getting arrested.

The Cleveland Browns are no exception and the two most notable people at risk are wide receiver Antonio Callaway and running back Kareem Hunt. Both have had serious issues away from the field that have jeopardized their careers. Their respective acquisitions have drawn substantial criticism from people like me.

Callaway had an outstanding six weeks to finish the 2018 season and has been a standout in OTAs and minicamp. At worst, he stands to be the team's fourth receiver, but he has the chance to elevate himself into the top three this year and could ultimately become THE guy across from Odell Beckham with continued development.

Being around the team and in the facility has been really good for him. He's got a daughter he is motivated to provide for and he seems to really understand what could be ahead of him if he stays focused.

Kareem Hunt's most recent off field incident was obviously far more public. When left to his own devices, he has made some awful choices involving alcohol, fighting and women.

There's a significant level of scrutiny around him, understandably, so he may be far less inclined to risk anything and continue with those things that could really help him turn his life around.

Counseling, public service and just being surrounded by people looking out for his best interests.

Hunt, assuming he stays out of trouble, will be available week nine of the regular season and then could provide the Browns the most potent backfield in the NFL along with Nick Chubb and maybe Duke Johnson, depending on how that situation goes.

Particularly with Hunt, there is real risk for damage to the organization if Hunt were to find himself in a similar situation as the one that got him suspended, so the stakes are even higher there.

Ultimately, if the Browns can get through this time before training camp unscathed with an organization completely focused on achieving the same goals, Callaway and Hunt could provide big time playmakers for a team that already has a number of them. And that could be the difference between a good season and a special one.
