Browns 2024 Combine Prep: Wide Receiver Roman Wilson
The wound is still pretty fresh for Buckeye fans, who watched their beloved Ohio State fall to TTUN for a third straight season. One lasting image that may never leave our mind is when Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson crossed the goalline with (or without) scoring a touchdown early in the contest.
For those OSU fans who are also Browns fans though, if you're able to take off your Scarlett and Gray colored glasses you'll notice Wilson could be really nice weapon at the next level.
Stats won't tell the entire story of Wilson's career. Although he did progress each of his four years as a Wolverine, he never eclipsed 1,000 yards and his best year was 2023 when he had 48 catches for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He did this in an offense that was skewed heavily in favor of running the football. An offense that at one point ran the ball on 32 straight plays in a half of football.
What Wilson does exceptionally well and better than most guys in the draft is his ability to hand catch the football. Guys at this level have the best hands in the world but often times they don't use them. The term "body catch" comes to mind and Browns top wideout Amari Cooper, primarily snags the football this way.
However, when you watch Wilson catch the football, he continually makes a point to go with his two hands and secure the football.
He also has a level of toughness that sets him apart from all of the rest. He is not afraid to stick his nose in there or go across the middle for the field, something that is rare in football today.
The downside to Wilson is that he has the slot type of body. He stands at 6'0 and weighs 180 pounds but with his small frame, he doesn't possess the breakaway speed that you would want. He makes up for that with really good quickness and exceptional route running – think a slightly stiffer version of Jarvis Landry.
If Wilson were to be available at 54 and the Browns should consider taking him. Despite the fact that he's a Wolverine, Wilson could help add to a wide receiver room that could use a boost this offseason.
