The Cleveland Browns have reportedly signed a former first-round draft pick to the practice squad. Alex Leatherwood was picked 17th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2021 NFL Draft.

After starting all seventeen games with the Raiders his rookie year, the team decided to move him to guard and then later to release him ahead of last season. He was claimed by the Bears prior to the start of the year and spent the entire year with them.

Leatherwood was cut by the Bears as part of roster cuts and now finds himself with his third team in as many years. For the Browns, Leatherwood offers the pedigree as a former five-star recruit who played tackle for Alabama. He certainly has size and talent that the team is hoping to unlock.

That will fall squarely on the shoulders of offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Callahan has earned recognition across the league as one of the best to develop linemen. His track record with the Browns has been impressive and if he can work Leatherwood into a functional backup, it would be considered a success. The ceiling would certainly be higher if Callahan can maximize his talent.

It will be determined where they envision him on our offensive line since he has played both guard and tackle. He won't be expected to play anytime soon unless the Browns suffer significant injuries.
