Browns Waive Injured Edge Rusher
The Cleveland Browns have reportedly waived second year defensive end Isaiah Thomas according to reports. Thomas was a seventh-round draft pick in last year's class. He showed promise in his rookie season, recording 1.5 sacks in his limited action.
Thomas has been out for weeks after suffering a knee injury during the Hall of Fame game. He had surgery in the days after and has been rehabbing for a return. The Browns would love to have him back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
The move to waive Thomas without an injury designation may signal that he is close to being able to return. The team could have chosen to carry him on the initial 53-man roster and put him on short-term injured reserve which would have required that he miss the first four games. To do so would have possibly meant cutting another veteran and then bringing that player back after the move to IR was officially made.
Now it becomes a waiting game for Thomas and the team. Other teams will have until noon tomorrow to make a claim for him. If one does they will be guaranteeing him a roster spot. If not he has the option to sign anywhere he chooses, likely though to a practice squad. It would be a nice addition to build upon for the Browns practice squad that will begin taking shape tomorrow.
