Browns To Don All-White Throwback Uniforms In Week 17 vs. Jets
The Browns are bringing back their all-white throwback uniforms for the final time this season in Week 17.
Cleveland will wear its throwback white jersey, white helmet and white pants for the third time when it hosts the Jets for Thursday Night Football at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The game is the first home primetime game the Browns will have this year and the second time the Browns will rock the classic look on a primetime stage this season.
The Browns debuted the jerseys in Week 2 on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game that could be considered a low point of the season after Cleveland fell, 26-22, and lost Pro Bowl RB Nick Chubb for the season with a gruesome knee injury.
The next time the Browns wore the uniforms, however, was memorable for much better reasons. Cleveland also wore them in Week 6 when it stunned the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers and won 19-17 on a game-winning field goal.
The uniforms pay homage to the first look the Browns adorned upon the berth of the franchise in 1946. They kept the white helmets until the 1952 season, when they shifted to the orange shell that became the staple look of their uniforms and logo.
A vocal segment of fans on social media had long clamored for the Browns to bring back the white helmets, but they couldn’t until the league allowed teams to use an alternate helmet shell — one that is a different color than the team's main helmet — in 2022.
The Browns, who had also turned to fans to vote on their midfield logo design and selection of a new dog logo, listened to them again this year. They brought back the white shell, added an orange and brown stripe and paired it with the same white throwback uniforms the team wore in 2021 to commemorate their 75th Anniversary season.
It’s unknown if the Browns will carry the look beyond this year, but they’ve always had an alternate uniform at the ready in each of their seasons since they introduced their current home-away jersey set in 2020.
