Myles Garrett pens a letter to fans in The Players Tribune
As the season is set to get started with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett penned a letter to fans (and the world) via The Players Tribune.
When he was drafted to a 1-15 team, Garrett talked about how he and that draft class were there to change the culture before they met most of their teammates. He's held himself to an incredibly high standard, setting goals for himself including the Pro Bowl, All-Pro and with those accomplished, Defensive Player of the Year.
No one can put more pressure on Garrett than he has himself. That also carries over to the standings. Garrett is determined to win, which is what this letter was truly addressing.
He starts out by talking about Freddie Kitchens and how Kitchens addressed them his first time as the head coach. He wasn't supposed to be here, but he's here. That mentality has proliferated through the locker room and rather than look at is as hype they have to meet, it's an opportunity on which they can capitalize.
From there, Garrett takes readers through the 0-16 season and how he despite that, he felt good about where the team was. They felt like they were close, that a few plays missed were the difference between winning and losing as opposed to going in to expect losing every week.
The most interesting and impactful part is when Garrett talks about Baker Mayfield at half time of the Houston Texans game. Garrett describes that as the moment the team knew he was their quarterback.
He finishes with a thank you to the fans for enduring the past few seasons and then finishes by saying they should be excited for what should be a special season. As he always does, Myles Garrett always seems to know what to do and do it before being asked and he strikes the perfect tone.
