Cleveland Browns sign Donnie Lewis Jr. to practice squad, release Paul Adams

In a move that seemed likely to happen the second the pick was made in April's draft, the Cleveland Browns signed cornerback Donnie Lewis Jr. to their practice squad. Lewis was selected in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Tulane.
Lewis suffered a Jones fracture in his foot, which prevented him from participating in any of the testing before the draft and wasn't fully recovered enough to take part in the team's minicamp. He was ready for the team's training camp and did participate in all four preseason games, but it seems unlikely that he fully trusted his foot.
The Browns liked Lewis enough to draft him with the likely intent of getting to the practice squad. It would seem they want to get him back to being confident in his foot to see what he can do as a potential option for next season.
To make room for Lewis, the Browns released offensive tackle Paul Adams, who was signed earlier this week. The team also announced they released Phillip Gaines from injured reserve. Gaines was placed there on August 31st with a concussion.
