Deshaun Watson Provides Update On Shoulder, Hopes To Be Ready For Browns Spring Workouts

On the latest episode of the QB Unplugged podcast, Deshaun Watson shared an update regarding his recovery from shoulder surgery and when he expects to be back with the Browns

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has a critical season ahead of him in 2024.

First things first though, the former Texans quarterback is working his way back from surgery after fracturing the glenoid in his throwing shoulder back in Week 10. Watson had surgery shortly thereafter and has been rehabbing in Los Angeles in the hopes of being ready to practice with the team when its offseason program ramps up in April.

On Friday, the Browns signal caller shared an update on his recovery via the QB Unplugged podcast that he co-hosts with his personal coach Qunicy Avery, and provided a timetable for the next phase of his recover, which includes resuming throwing.

"Probably another four-to-five weeks on the front end," Watson said. "And then for sure another three weeks after that. So between the three-to-four month range is where we start throwing ... so I would say probably April. Hopefully if everything goes all well I'll be able to do spring. We'll see when we get closer to that."

This week marks nine weeks since Watson had surgery to repair the shoulder fracture, which puts him at a little over two months into his recovery. Prior to outlining that timeline, he suggested that he actually got slightly ahead of schedule and needed to ease up to ensure he's going through the process properly.

Those comments echo Browns general manager Andrew Berry, who said Watson was ahead of schedule in his end of season press conference earlier in the week. Berry also expressed optimism that Watson will be ready to go in time for spring workouts.

In the first two seasons since Cleveland traded three first round picks for Watson has appeared in just 12 games, with varying results. In that span, he's thrown for 2,217 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while completing just under 60-percent of his passes. Before his 2023 campaign was cut short by the shoulder ailment, he had thrown for 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions.

His lasting memory of the season was a perfect 14-of-14 for 134 yards and a touchdown in a 33-31 comeback win over Baltimore. He'll look to channel that performance when he reclaims the starting job this fall in an effort to prove Cleveland right in making a blockbuster trade to acquire him in 2022.
