Former Browns Number One Pick Named Starter
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made a decision as to who will replace Tom Brady under center as the team's starter. The team announced today that they will be riding with 6 for the season opener in week 1. Baker Mayfield the former number one overall pick in the 2018 draft by the Cleveland Browns has won out in the competition with Kyle Trask to win the job.
For Mayfield, he will be starting for his third team since the Browns traded him away last offseason after acquiring Deshaun Watson. Mayfield was eventually traded to Carolina, where he ultimately struggled. After Matt Rhule was fired, Mayfield eventually found himself third on the depth chart.
Mayfield who is known for being a fiery competitor, asked for his release from the team and they obliged his request. Mayfield eventually went to the Rams to replace an injured Matt Stafford. He did go on to have a couple of high points under the tutelage of Sean McVey. Less than 48 hours after signing, Mayfield would start and play well while leading the Raiders to a victory in the final moments.
Bruce Arians, who is still in a prominent role with Tampa Bay in the front office, has always been a big believer in the talent of Mayfield. Prior to being hired as Tampa's head coach, Arians publicly volleyed for the Browns head job at the end of the 2018 season after Mayfield set the rookie record for touchdown passes. In Tampa, Mayfield will have dynamic pass catchers led by Mike Evans and if they can put together a scheme on offense that can take advantage of his strengths, maybe he can win enough to stick around.
