Injury Update: Jacob Phillips to Miss Entire Season According to Reports
According to ESPN's AdamSchefter, Browns linebacker Jacob Phillips will miss the entire 2023 season, with a torn pectoral muscle, according to his sources.
This is certainly terrible news for Phillips, as the former third round pick, who has started games and played well in flashes. Unfortunately, he has never been able to stay healthy and play a full season as the injuries have piled up during his time with the team.
For Phillips, this is the second consecutive year that has been ended with a torn pec muscle. This also likely means an end to his time with the team as he is currently in the final year of his rookie deal. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
For the Browns, he was not guaranteed to make the final roster but his chances were good, if he could have both played well and remain healthy to start. Linebackers coach Jason Tarver recently spoke about Phillips, praising him for the work he had put in the weight room getting bigger during the offseason.
This now means that linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk becomes a lock to make the roster and perhaps gives a young player like undrafted free agent Mohamoud Diabate a chance to impress and make the team. Linebacker Matthew Adams has been out since the start of camp and is still working his way back as well.
I would expect the team to also explore all options in regard to adding to the position, especially until both Anthony Walker and Sione Takitaki return fully.
