LIVE UPDATES: Smith-Njigba's Late TD Lifts Seahawks to Comeback Over Browns, 24-20

Welcome to our live blog as the Cleveland Browns travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. We'll keep you updated on all the news and views from the game in real time, with some highlights and opinion tossed in.

SEATTLE, Wash. — There are a few different perspectives on the 2023 Cleveland Browns that have taken over conversations around the National Football League.

Some folks are waiting for the bottom to fall out with inconsistent quarterback play from back-up P.J. Walker while Deshaun Watson's injured shoulder takes longer than expected to heal. Others admire that the Browns defense has managed to put together one of the great performances through six games in franchise history.

As they say in golf, there are no pictures on the scorecard.

Cleveland is 4-2 and arrives in Seattle with its best record since the Browns returned to the league in 1999. Only the 2020 and 2001 teams matched this year's start with four wins through six games. The Browns won back-to-back games for only the fourth time in their last 17 tries after they survived a high-scoring shootout in Indianapolis last week, 39-38.

On Sunday, they'll play a Seattle Seahawks team that has also had a really good start to the season. The Seahawks are also 4-2, they're coming off a nice win over Arizona and their veteran players are playing like it. Geno Smith is having another nice season after winning the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Bobby Wagner anchors a defense that has been fabulous since Week 4.

How will Cleveland handle one of the two loudest environments in the NFL? Will Jerome Ford play? Can P.J. Walker guide the Browns to a third straight win against a quality team?

Welcome to our live updates blog of the game, where I will keep you updated in real time with all the latest news and info this afternoon. I'll also toss in a few highlights and opinions along the way.

I'll circulate the latest information towards the top so that this post moves in reverse chronological order.

Enjoy the game:

4:07 p.m. - This one hurts for the Browns. Another game loss that is just a brutal pill to swallow. So close to a 3-game win streak, but ultimately not quite enough to close the deal. Seattle wins, 24-20.

4:00 p.m. - After such a promising afternoon, Cleveland is in trouble. Jaxon Smith-Njibga scores from nine yards away to give Seattle the lead with 38 seconds to play. SEATTLE 24, CLEVELAND 20

3:56 p.m. - Well, Seattle is in business. A pinballed interception gives the Seahawks the ball at the Browns 43 yard line with 1:57 to go, down three with 2 timeouts.

3:36 p.m. - Corey Bojorquez punts for only the second time today and pins the Seahawks back on their own 10 yard line early in the fourth quarter. The Browns defense have played exceptionally well since a bad start the first two drives. They're 10 minutes away from bringing home a win back to Cleveland. Long way to go still, but Cleveland is in great shape.

3:21 p.m. - Seattle scored 17 points in its first three possessions. In their six possessions since then, they've punted four times and thrown two INT's. five of those six possessions lasted only three plays. Major improvement from the Browns defense, combined with some bad throws from Geno Smith.

3:14 p.m. - For the first time this afternoon, the Browns take the lead. A 9-play drive capped off by a 27-yard field goal from Hopkins gives Cleveland a lead, capitalizing off Maurice Hurst's interception. CLEVELAND 20, SEATTLE 17

3:01 p.m. - Dustin Hopkins kicks a short field goal for Cleveland to tie things up. After a brutal start to this game, the Browns have settled in nicely and fought back to even. 7:29 to play in the third quarter, SEATTLE 17, CLEVELAND 17.

2:50 p.m. - Seattle starts the second half with the football and promptly punts it away. By the way, it's been announced in the press box that Greg Newsome is QUESTIONABLE to return with a groin injury.

2:26 p.m. - Cleveland took over deep in its own territory with three timeouts, the 2-minute warning and momentum on its side, but the Browns promptly went 3-and-out. Seattle was cruising down the field and looked destined to add to it's lead before halftime. But Martin Emerson Jr. jumped an out-route along the sideline and picked off Geno Smith's pass for DK Metcalf. It's Cleveland's first takeaway of the game, and the Browns kneel out the clock. Halftime at Lumen Field.

2:13 p.m. - The Browns keep fighting and get within 3. Despite turning it over twice in the first half, Cleveland trails by just a field goal. Kareem Hunt crosses the goal line this time. Personally, I love how Kevin Stefanski has designed the game plan this week. He's been terrific in giving the Browns a chance today. SEATTLE 17, CLEVELAND 14

2:00 p.m. - What a wild sequence. PJ Walker throws and interception that I would swear should have been overturned by replay. I thought Njoku got that ball back and that Woolen didn't have control of it when he was downed by contact. Either way, the Browns defense stiffens and quickly forces a 3-and-out for Seattle.

1:45 p.m. - Another big play ultimately hurts the defense. Cleveland needs to tighten up a bit, but keeps the Seahawks out of the end zone with a minute left in the first quarter. SEATTLE 17, CLEVELAND 7.

1:36 p.m. - Holy smokes what a great couple of play calls by Kevin Stefanski. Incredibly creative. PJ Walker and the defense got caught looking in the wrong spots on three straight plays. A little screen pass over the middle to Kareem Hunt, followed by a play-action screen to Pierre Strong for 41 yards, then two screen fakes (one left, one right) before Walker dumped one over to tight end David Njoku, who raced to the end zone for an 18-yard score. Game on. SEATTLE 14, CLEVELAND 7.

1:30 p.m. - Browns pass rush almost got home, but Geno Smith's pocket presence has been really solid so far. Smith found Ty Lockett in the back corner of the end zone from 12 yards out and the Browns trail by two scores early. SEATTLE 14, CLEVELAND 0.

1:23 p.m. - Good news, there's a long way to go. Bad news, Cleveland is off to a pretty rough start. After a nice third down throw from Walker to Amari Cooper to move the chains for the first time this afternoon, Jordyn Brooks came in and blindside blasted Walker, jarring the ball free. Seattle picked it up and takes over on the Browns' 41-yard line.

1:16 p.m. - Thanks in large part to a 45-yard run from Kenneth Walker III, the Seahawks surged down the field in eight plays and just 3:55. Jake Bobo runs in a jet sweep to put Seattle on the board first. SEATTLE 7, CLEVELAND 0.

1:08 p.m. - Not the start the Browns envisioned. The offense quickly goes three-and-out. For what it's worth, Kareem Hunt started the game at running back, but Jerome Ford took the third down carry. The Browns punt it away and Seattle takes over from its own 20.

1:00 p.m. - The Seahawks won the toss, deferred their choice to the second half. The Browns offense will take the field first. Let's see if the offense can get off to a good start.

12:46 p.m. - The officials for today's game are: referee Bill Vinovich, umpire Alex Moore, down judge Dale Keller, line judge Mark Perlman, field judge Joe Blubaugh, side judge Jimmy Buchanan, back judge Jimmy Russell, replay official Mark Butterworth, replay assistant Julie Johnson

11:35 a.m. - The Browns INACTIVES today against Seattle: QB Deshaun Watson, WR Cedric Tillman, CB Kahlef Hailassie, RB Jordan Wilkins, S Ronnie Hickman, DE Isaiah McGuire and DT Siaki Ika

The Seahawks INACTIVES today are: WR Cody Thompson, CB Kyu Blu Kelly, LB Drake Thomas, G Phil Haynes, T McClendon Curtis, T Raiqwon O'Neal

11:00 a.m. - It's a spectacular morning in Seattle. Temperatures are cool and will only warm up to roughly 50 degrees by kickoff, but there isn't a cloud in the sky and won't be all day.
